Information technology allows working and studying from a distance. It has been widely acknowledged that learning can happen also in other places than inside classrooms. Even though traditional lecturing and classroom-based education are not necessarily obsolete, new pedagogical approaches, methods and technologies should be used in education. 

Technology allows new tools and applications for group-based learning and education. There are lots of promises, but reality may be different. Ideally, the goal is to develop a learning environment that supports learners in best possible way. 

There are several technologies and applications available for group based learning. These can be categorized into two main categories: firstly, tools that are part of learning environment and secondly, other applications. The first technologies refer to digital learning environments, such as Moodle. The second category includes are mostly social-media applications that are generally available for interaction and information sharing, but may be suitable for learning purposes. We look these technologies and applications using empirical data and experiences from group of university students The key issue in learning is interaction between teachers, students and student groups - and this interaction should be empowered with information technology.
