A region of the mitochondrial gene nad1 was sequenced for species identification of entomopathogenic anamorphic ascomycetes of the genus Lecanicillium (former complex species Verticillium lecanii). Among 39 isolates under investigation Lecanicillium muscarium was the most numerous species (about 70 % of all isolates collected in Russia on the different hosts, predominantly on the insects from the order Homoptera). One strain was identified as species L. longisporum and two as L. psalliotae. The sequence similarity of the examined isolates to the reference strains was 99-100 %. The presence of four molecular haplotypes, described earlier, was found among the species Lecanicillium muscarium. The quote of haplotype A among L. muscarium strains was 51.4 %, B - 25.7 %, C - 14.3 %, D - 8.6 %. Only haplotype C showed specific association with a certain geographical area, limited southwest Georgia and the Krasnodar Territory. The analysis of the morphometric parameters of isolates which belong to different haplotypes or species showed no clear boundaries between the different groups of the strains.
