This article is based on a conference presentation given at the following 2-day conference: Life and cult of Canute the Holy: Interdisciplinary research seminar in Odense, 7 November 2017, 11.30 – 12.00, in context of the research centre CENTRUM at Odense City Museums (http://museum.odense.dk/centrum). It explores the complex nature of relics as materials for academic study, considers the research background and current focus, and summarises the scientific analyses and methodology employed by the authors in their collaborative studies to date, as well as the future opportunity of relics research, particularly in the Nordic Region.
