The teaching of strategic management matters to Business Schools although its evolution from an open, engaged activity to one more narrowly focused on theory teaching is problematic. This theory-practice gap is harmful and calls into question our relevance to students. This paper contends that a practice perspective can help to address these concerns. Specifically the main criticisms of strategic management teaching today are listed (from a literature review available from the authors) and key ontological dimensions from a practice perspective are identified that may help address them. These dimensions are then used to form a typology of four ways in which a practice perspective may serve to engage students better in important everyday strategizing. Each practice type is illustrated by a short vignette.
