Abstract
This study examines factors related to different aspects of poverty in Laos with two-level structural equation modelling (MSEM), which allows simultaneous assessment of household and village levels. The results show that expenditure and multidimensional poverty are strongly related on both levels. Household multidimensional poverty is associated with the proportion of children in a household but not with household size. On the village level, multidimensional deprivation is related to low levels of infrastructure and high prevalence of practising agricultural activities. The study suggests that communities in Laos are important determinants of poverty and encourages further use of MSEM in poverty research. Copyright (C) 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
