Finland is the country with a history of high rates of suicide. However,
since 1986, Finland launched a national project of suicide prevention.
All the suicides in 1987 (about 1500) were thoroughly investigated,
using the evidence-based method of psychological autopsy. It revealed
in 93% of suicide victims at least one mental disorder, and almost 2/3 of
them had depressive disorder. The authorities introduced new education
programs for doctors and target treatment approaches for risk groups.
By 2005 the suicide rate in the country dropped by 40%. A significant
decrease of suicides is attributed to the Project though the so called
‘cohort effect’ cannot be excluded, and higher living standards could
also contribute to the result. Depressive patients nowadays seem to get
adequate treatment earlier than before, though a number of problems
still need to be solved.
