The aim of this paper is to introduce a novel way to measure eco-efficiency in the Finnish forest industry. The eco-efficiency indicators are based on the evaluations of the expert Delphi panel. The second aim of this paper is to evaluate the suitability of public data for calculating eco-efficiency in the Finnish forest industry. The three biggest forest industry companies are used as case studies. According to the Delphi panel, the economic performance of the eco-efficiency should be measured by the value added indicator. The best way to measure the environmental performance would be by the environmental impacts or emissions groups. Based on the public data, the value added data can only be calculated at the global level, although the environmental impacts and emissions groups could be presented in detail as mill-level figures. This research raises the question of the usability of public data as a source of research material. Two suggestions for calculating the eco-efficiency in the Finnish forest industry are provided. To be better able to use the public data, one would need to have access to more detailed value added data, or to use the amount of production as an indicator of economic performance.
