Abstract

All students of British history associate Hastings with the battle that ultimately won Duke William of Normandy the crown of England on 14th October, 1066. As part of my three-year research project on multilingual practices in England
in the ‘long twelfth century’, I paid a visit to the places where my long century began: Hastings and the small town of Battle - the site of the 1066 battle, just fifteen
minutes from Hastings by train.
