Despite the fierce criticism, videogames have managed to enter the mainstream and establish themselves as one of most widely enjoyed types of transmedia storytelling (Jenkins). Their functions, however, are not limited to entertainment contexts, as they are often used in medicine to help patients cope with long-term hospitalization; detect the risk of dementia; provide a creative outlet; as well as raise awareness about mental health and communicate to the audience the struggles of people experiencing mental health issues. This paper will explore manifestations of grief, as presented in Gris (2018), an award-winning videogame, while also drawing parallels with Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’ model of the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance), as presented in her book On Death and Dying (1969). The paper will focus inter alia on the function of color and music in the game, while also introducing concepts regarding immersion, gameplay, and ludus in an attempt to show how these elements are utilized to resonate with the players, thus allowing them to reflect on their personal struggles and, potentially, overcome them via a virtual healing experience.
