The special theme of the 12th Logistics Survey 2023 was the resilience of companies' supply chains, and it has been implemented in cooperation with the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom and the Service Security Center. The report also examines Finland's logistics operating environment and key figures of companies' supply chains. Among other things, the world's longest and most widely collected national survey data on logistics costs has been accumulated.
The survey was carried out between April and June 2023, to which nearly 1,500 Finnish companies in industry (incl. construction), trade and logistics responded.
The companies located in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Pohjanmaa and Kanta-Häme were the most satisfied with their operating conditions in their location. The worst assessments were given by companies located in North and South Karelia, Kainuu, and North Savo. Estimates of the condition of the transport infrastructure were now significantly lower than in 2020.
In 2022, logistics costs weighted by the turnover of companies and industries were on average 13.8% of turnover (in reference year 2019 about 13.5%). The total costs of logistics in industry and commerce were EUR 50.5 billion in 2022 (EUR 39.3 billion in 2019). Relative to the gross national product, this corresponds to approximately 12.5% (the corresponding figure in 2019 was approximately 10.7%).
Harms caused by supply chain risks increased across the board since 2012, but the vast majority of perceived risks were below average on a 5-point scale. The biggest changes were seen in material availability problems from suppliers and the risk of political instability; their influence had grown significantly.
World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI) is based on the evaluations of the operators of the international freight forwarding and logistics industry on the functionality of each country's foreign trade logistics. In the 2023 LPI, Finland ranked second among 139 countries right after Singapore, which is Finland's best ranking: in 2012, Finland was third in the LPI's total points.
