Abstract

From 2011 to 2019, more than 800 exchange students have responded to an exit questionnaire about their experiences at a major university in Finland. While most or all degree-related courses for these students were taught in English, Finland’s two official languages are Finnish and Swedish. Although never specifically asked about Finnish language or Finnish culture in the questionnaires, many comments shed light on these issues. This exploratory research provides a snapshot about how the exchange students experienced the language and culture. To this end, this research adopts a simplified qualitative methodology based on thematic networks to investigate the exit questionnaires and present the most common themes related to Finnish language and Finnish culture. Results reveal many positive feelings about the culture, although other results indicated a sort of tension in relation to access (or lack thereof) to native Finnish speakers.
