Abstract

The onset of the coronavirus pandemic in the spring of 2020 wreaked havoc on education systems worldwide, leading to the temporary short- or long-term closure of schools and a shift to online teaching (Onyema et al., 2020; Parpala & Niinistö-Sivuranta, 2022). On the front lines of this rapid shift to online teaching were teachers and even, in some cases, student teachers, who found themselves suddenly responsible for managing an unprecedented transition from traditional contact teaching to online lessons for school children. This research considers five student teachers majoring in Classroom Teacher Education at a Finnish university and their experiences teaching at an elementary school during the coronavirus pandemic in spring 2020. Their previously unexamined stories add dimension and perspective to our established notions of what happened in schools in Finland in the spring of 2020 and rebuild a more complete, nuanced, and varied picture.
