The aim of this thesis work was to design load-bearing structures for one segment of a Finnish pier. The focus was on designing the reinforcing steel structures of the concrete slabs and beams. Moreover, the strength of the steel bars in the movement joint and the steel piles were calculated. The main dimensions of the segment were pre-defined in the general plan of the pier.
Calculation models were completed in Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis program to determine the largest moments for the slabs and piles, and moments, shearing and torque forces for the beams. The reinforced concreted structures were designed according to Eurocode 2 and the steel structures according to Eurocode 3.
The crash load of a ship created the largest forces to the majority of the slabs, beams and piles. In addition, a mobile crane strained a number of beams when its weight hit on the beam.
This work formed the basis on the structural design of the pier segment, since certain details, such as the casting mode, was changed after the finalization of this work. Moreover, the piles will be implemented as composite structures.
