Tiivistelmä

This book provides an overview of issues related to causal explanations in historiography. It suggests the need to clarify the conceptual core of causal explanation in historiography and connect this conceptual core to the surrounding conceptual space of goals, notions, and patterns of reasoning. Many of these goals, notions, and patterns of reasoning are sometimes confused, unclear, and ambiguous. Therefore, the notion of causal explanation in historiography needs to be powerful enough to suggest how these confusions, unclarities, and ambiguities might be addressed. The intertwined issues of historiographical explanation, narratives and mechanisms, hierarchies of causes, explanatory depth, the formulation of explanandum, counterfactual reasoning, generalizations, historical contingency, and values in historiography are examined. The conclusion argues that the goals, notions, and patterns of reasoning in historiography related to causal explanations are also relevant to wider concerns, especially with respect to understanding the future.
