Our paper concerns the structure and function of main clauses of relative clauses (henceforth, RCs) in Finnish conversation, and it is connected to and inspired by our prior joint research on Finnish RCs (Laury & Helasvuo 2016, Helasvuo, Laury & Rauma 2022, Helasvuo & Laury forthcoming). The findings that we focus on here are that the main clauses of RCs in our data are light in terms of meaning and structure and tend to merely present the referent of the head noun of the RC, and that the main information, the content the participants in conversation focus on in subsequent interaction, is expressed in the RC. Many RCs in our data lack main clauses entirely and consist of only the head NP followed by an RC.
