Abstract

Sustainability Window (SuWi) analysis is a novel tool to analyze the different dimensions of sustainability. It can be used to define the minimum economic development to fulfill the requirements for social sustainability and the maximum economic development not to surpass the environmental limits. The method provides quantitative measures to define whether the real development of GDP is within the sustainability limits using different indicators for measuring social welfare and environmental stress. The SDG indicators and selected Cuban indicators have been used in the analysis. Cuba has an exciting profile among developing countries since its development has been related to sustainability in several fields. Unfortunately, the US blockade against Cuba has severely limited the possibilities for development in all spheres of life. However, Cuba has been able to develop successful sustainability policies in different sectors to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The SuWi results can be used to visualize the sustainability doughnut to illustrate the critical areas of
development where policy intervention may be needed to reach sustainability. In addition, the doughnut
economy visualization is constructed for Cuban development to analyze both strong and weak
sustainability.
