This chapter examines the early years of the International Federation of Musicians, outlining the key issues that the organisation addressed in its formative years, including debates over which musicians should be organised, relationships with the recording industry, changing technology and the movement of working musicians across international borders. The chapter argues that while such issues came to be somewhat perennial, they were given a particular focus as attempts were made to build internationalism after the horrors of the Second World War.
