Organometallic oligonucleotide complexes, formed through either binding of a small molecular organometallic compound to an oligonucleotide or covalent metalation of the oligonucleotide itself, are summarized, with focus on the latter. Synthetic efforts toward oligonucleotides bearing organometallic and organometalloid modifications are discussed, as well as the realized and proposed applications of such compounds.
