Over the course of 1368, a plan was hatched by Elias Raymundus, then Master of the Order, to take possession of the body of St Thomas Aquinas, which had rested at the Cistercian abbey of Fossanova since his death on 7 March 1274, smuggle it out of Italy, and then bring the relics to the convent at Toulouse. A key player in this story is Onorato, Count of Fondi, who initially stole Thomas’s relics from Fossanova, before negotiating their transfer to the Order. While these events were known through a narrative by the secretary of Elias, Raymundus Hugonis, preserved in a manuscript of Toulouse, this study offers a critical edition of a previously unstudied version of that narrative, included within a Dominican legendary (from Cividale), now preserved in the Dominican Archivio at Bologna. We argue that it represents a draft version, prior to corrections and additions being added in the Toulouse version. The edition provided is that of the Bologna manuscript, to which the additions and corrections made in the Toulouse manuscript have been added in the critical apparatus.
