Lounaispaikka is a regional GI centre in Southwest Finland. The main focus of Lounaispaikka is to develop and offer services for GI users, coordinate the regional cooperation in GI activities in order to benefit from synergy of the cooperation. Lounaispaikka is financed by seven regional organisations and need for a regional GI cooperation project is widely seen important within the region. Through the years, Lounaispaikka has established numerous GI services many of which have been unique in Finland. Lounaispaikka also participates in the building process of the national NSDI while strengthening its role in the regional SDI. The main lessons learned in the regional GI cooperation point out that easy to use GI services are needed for growing number of user groups, increasing production and need for GI data set down technical and organisational demands for joint production and maintenance of data and services, copyright reform and data sharing.
