The purpose of this book, introduced in this chapter, is to develop: scholarly understanding about intersections of historical consciousness and moral consciousness; and new theoretical tools for History teaching and learning that can support endeavours in educating for democratic citizenship. History teaching is expected to contribute to developing students’ critical thinking and commitment to democratic values and human rights, yet there is little research on how historical interconnections are interpreted by students and linked to their moral consciousness. The book has the potential of developing nuanced understandings and strategies of intersections between historical consciousness and moral consciousness to meet the purposes stated earlier.
