In this chapter, we introduce Axel Honneth’s recognition theory as the
basis for the individuals’ moral growth. Axel Honneth is the foremost
representative of the so called third generation of Frankfurt School. He
started his academic career as Habermasian Marxist influenced by
Foucault’s philosophical and anthropological ideas. In his early
writings, Honneth connected Foucault with the tradition of critical
theory. Nowadays Honneth act as a director of The Institute of Social
Research at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universities in Frankurt am Main.
Honneth launched his theory of recognition in 1994 and re-orientated
the whole Frankfurt School research. Ever since there has been intensive
discussion going on concerning the Honnethian theory of recognition.
