Current augmented reality applications are mostly limited to handheld devices. This limits the possibilities of augmented reality and is not particularly immersive because of small screen sizes. This experience report summarizes what kind of technology is currently available to achieve immersion in augmented reality and how it was utilized in a student project organized in University of Turku during the winter of 2014–2015. In the project, a custom immersive augmented reality solution was built by using an Oculus Rift head-mounted display coupled with a camera system and a personal computer. The possibilities of this system were demonstrated by creating an immersive augmented reality game for a public student project event where feedback was gathered. It is concluded that, while a fairly believable level of immersion is already achievable with relatively affordable devices, new technological advancements are needed to enable more robust applications.
