Summary: From both an educational and scientific perspective, there is an urgent need to better understand the ways to support the development of the type of mathematical knowledge that is needed in the knowledge and innovation society. Previous evidence shows that for some students the development of these skills is a natural outcome of typical mathematical instruction, yet most students fail to develop mathematical skills and knowledge that are practically useful outside of the mathematics classroom. Participating in society in the 21st century will require flexible, integrated knowledge that may not be sufficiently supported by traditional classroom teaching. In this project, we aim to examine the instructional practices that lead to the development of flexible mathematical knowledge by examining scaffolding in digital game-based learning environments to support knowledge integration. We aim to use this knowledge in testing novel scaffolding approaches to promote the development of flexible mathematical knowledge in all children. This project involves three complementary studies aimed at better understanding the nature of flexible mathematical knowledge and effective mechanisms for supporting it. The studies culminate in a capstone study that assesses the power of scaffolding in digital game-based learning environments to promote flexible mathematical knowledge
