Additional infoIn August 2024, 82 skulls housed in the collections of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden were returned to Finland. The remains belong to individuals who lived between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries and originated from different parts of Finland and from diverse social backgrounds. Their identities, origins, and life histories have largely remained unknown.

The aim of the KAROL project is to investigate who these individuals were and what their lives were like. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the study will generate information on their chronology, health, diet, mobility, and kinship relationships. The project promotes an ethically sustainable and respectful approach to human remains and enables the construction of a more detailed and humane picture of people in the past. At the same time, it creates the conditions for unidentified individuals to be returned to their home regions for reburial.
