Summary: Hanke tarkastelee Namibiaa ja Afrikkaa koskevan tiedon muodostumisen prosesseja Suomessa 1870-1990.
Additional info: This project investigates the collective processes of knowledge formation generated by the Finnish presence in Owambo in present-day northern Namibia. The Finnish Missionary Society, founded in 1859, set up a mission in Owambo in 1870, where the work of the missionaries initiated epistemological and cultural transformations that had long-lasting effects. Furthermore, the missionaries produced knowledge about the Aawambo and their culture for Finnish audiences. Disseminated through various channels and materials, it had a significant impact on the perception of Owambo and Africa in Finland.
Our project examines these transformations and the produced knowledge and explores ways to decolonise the history of the Finnish-Namibian relations by producing historical knowledge that extends beyond western categories of thought. By bringing together Finnish and Namibian scholars, we aim to write increasingly inclusive, multivocal histories.
