Biography

Tatu Hyttinen is an Associate Professor of Criminal Law and holds the title of Docent (Adjunct Professor) in Criminal Law at the University of Turku. He holds a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.), a Master of Laws (LL.M.), and a Master of Social Sciences (M.Soc.Sc.), all of which were earned at the University of Turku.

Previously, Hyttinen worked in various research and teaching positions, including as a Postdoctoral Researcher, Senior Researcher, and University Lecturer in Criminal and Procedural Law at the University of Turku, as well as a University Lecturer in Criminal Law at the University of Eastern Finland.

Hyttinen holds the title of varatuomari, which means he has received training in the courtroom. In addition to his academic roles, he has undertaken various criminal law-related tasks in both the public and private sectors. He also served, for instance, as a fixed-term District Court Judge (2018–2019) and as a member of the Non-Discrimination and Equality Tribunal (2019–2023). Currently, he is the Deputy Chair of the Non-Discrimination and Equality Tribunal (2023–2027) and a member of the Supervisory Board overseeing attorneys, public legal aid attorneys, and licensed legal counsels (2023–2026).

Hyttinen has been the Editor-in-Chief of the Lakimies journal since early 2023.



Research
Hyttinen's research focuses extensively on criminal law, characterised by a dynamic interplay between theory and practice. His work explores a range of topics, including criminal law theory, foundational doctrines and principles, the impact of fundamental and human rights on criminal law, as well as economic crimes, money laundering, and hate crimes.



Teaching
Hyttinen is the responsible teacher for criminal law, in charge of the teaching of basic, intermediate, and advanced courses in the field. He has completed pedagogical studies for teachers (60 ECTS credits), specialising in university pedagogy.
