Juha Ylisalo is a University Teacher (acting) at the Political Science unit. Additionally, he holds a Title of Docent in political science, especially the study of political parties and elections, at Tampere University. He is also a member of the editorial team of the journal Politiikka, published by the Finnish Political Science Association, and participates in the activities of the Finnish National Election Study (FNES) consortium, which is responsible for election studies conducted in connection with parliamentary elections.

Juha Ylisalo’s current research focusses particularly on the programmatic aims that parties set in parliamentary elections: their backgrounds and impacts on implemented policies, as well as the ways in which citizens evaluate the achievement of party goals. He has also studied the connections between government composition and public finances in European countries, the time perspective of politics, the acceptability of policy measures, as well as proposed and implemented reforms of the Finnish electoral system.

During the autumn semester of 2025, Juha Ylisalo is responsible for the APJ1 Political Forces lecture course and the P3.2 Classics of Political Theory course. He is also in charge of the following book exams: P1 Introduction to Political Science (book exam for minor subject students), P4 Political Systems, APJ1 Political Forces and APJ4 Comparative Politics. Students who are planning or working on theses related to party politics or elections are welcome to get in touch.
