Cultural history, media history, digital humanities
I was born in Turku in 1961, graduated with a Master's degree in 1987 and a PhD in 1993. I was an associate professor 1997-1999 and professor of cultural history from 1999. I was also Academy Professor 2017-2021.
My research interests focus on digital history and digital humanities, the cultural history of the nineteenth century (especially music history), history of film and the media, history of technology, and the history of emotions and the senses.
I teach in the History and Archaeology degree programme at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and above all in Cultural History at both Master's and PhD level.
