Department of Surgery includes Gastroenterological Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery and General Surgery.

Chief of Emergencies and Head of Division, Turku University Hospital, Finland, 2003-2010. At that time, Emergency Division included Emergencies of Surgery, Traumatology, Internal Medicine and Neurology.
From the very beginning of my scientific career and later throughout it, I have focused on general surgery, particularly on emergency and digestive surgery: from basic to translational and clinical science. I have been interested in the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, diagnosis, severity assessment and treatment of various surgical infections and inflammatory states, particularly in pancreatobiliary diseases such as acute pancreatitis, and in acute appendicitis. My major study topics include also colorectal cancer.
During the last decade, I have focused my main scientific interest on international and national prospective randomized multicenter controlled trials on endoscopic and emergency surgery, particularly on endoscopic biliary and pancreatic surgery and on acute appendicitis.
All surgical specialties, particularly Emergency Surgery, Gastroenterological Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery.
As Professor and Chief of Surgery, I am the person in charge of the undergraduate anf postgraduate teaching and training at the Department of Surgery, University of Turku. Department of Surgery includes Gastroenterological Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery and General Surgery.
