Selcen Erten Johansson
Corpus linguistics, text varieties (registers), media discourse analysis, teaching Turkish and English as a foreign language.
Selcen Erten Johansson is a Turkish linguist with a background in languages, both personally and professionally. After completing her schooling in Türkiye, Latvia, and Sweden, where she conducted linguistic analyses and studied several languages, she worked and studied at Michigan State University as a Fulbright scholar. In December 2019, she earned her Master's degree in Linguistics from Mersin University, Türkiye. During her Master's studies, she focused on analyzing languages in digital contexts, specializing in applying digital methods to Turkish grammar. This specialization led her to the Digital Linguistics program at the University of Turku in August 2021. She investigates web text varieties with a focus on Turkish, by combining corpus linguistics with media discourse analysis at the University of Turku.
Currently, Selcen Erten Johansson is applying the study of Turkish web registers to recent political events featured in Turkish media. Specifically, she analyzes how Finland's NATO membership process is portrayed in Turkish media through news reports, newspaper columns, and internet forums.
This research is supported by a grant from the Eino Jutikkala Fund of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters for the period 2024–2026.
