Basque; sociolinguistics; language contact; language ideologies; new speakers: linguistic landscapes, language making
I lead a research project on the language ideologies and language making of Generation Z, funded by the Emil Aaltonen foundation. We also edit a book on the linguistic landscapes of Turku.
I have been a University Lecturer at the University of Turku since August 2019. I studied Spanish Philology, Portuguese Philology and Finno-Ugric languages at the University of Helsinki and Basque in the University of Deusto, Bilbao. I taught Basque between 2005 and 2014 at the University of Helsinki, where I obtained my MA in 2008 and PhD in 2015. From 2016 to 2019 I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Eastern Finland with some periods as a visiting researcher at the University of Deusto, Bilbao.
My research focuses on sociolinguistics, bilingualism and contact linguistics. I have published several studies on bilingual speech and on the effect of language ideologies on the language practices of Basque-Spanish bilinguals in the Basque Country. My international research co-operation includes projects on new (non-native) speakers, language ideologies, and usage-based approaches to language contact. My recent research project focused on new speaker varieties, and on the language ideologies and attitudes in language contact situations, and currently I am starting a new research project on social change and variation in linguistic landscapes.
I teach a variety of courses: literature of the Spanish-speaking world, bilingualism and contact linguistics, code-switching, project laboratory, proseminar and bachelor's thesis, Spanish conversational skills for Freshmen students, academic writing, sociolinguistic reading circle, etc. I always like trying something new, so my teaching changes slightly every year.
