Mari languages; Uralic languages; temporality; aspectuality; modality; evidentiality; construction grammar; grammaticalization; language typology

I am a doctoral researcher in Finno-Ugric linguistics with specialization in the Mari languages. I received my MA degree from the University of Turku in 2020. My current research interests are related to grammar and its development especially from the perspective of TAME-phenomena. Besides of the research, I have been a board member in the Linguistic Association of Finland.

I am currently working to finish my PhD thesis with the title “Mari retrospection construction: Meanings, usage and constructionalization”.

The study investigates the so-called retrospection construction of Mari languages in the spirit of construction grammar. The retrospection construction consists of finite expressions combined with retrospectivizing markers, a typologically understudied group of temporal items. My aim is to examine the temporal profile of the retrospection construction, its ability to express non-temporal meanings as well as its semantic and morphosyntactic constructionalization. Regarding data and methods, my work is mainly a corpus study.

A central observation in my research is that the temporal perspective structure of the retrospection construction enables its usage also in modal and epistemic functions. The general goals of my thesis are thus to specify the relationships between different TAME-categories both functionally and in terms of grammatical change on the one hand, and to shed light on some poorly studies TAME-phenomena on the other hand.

I taught a basic course in Hill Mari language in the spring semester 2024 in the University of Turku. Besides, I have also taught Finnish as a foreign language.
