Research community or research topic
My doctoral research considers the effects of metal pollution on the nest and gut microbiota of three passerine bird species.

Biography

I am interested in the effects of anthropogenic pollution (e.g., heavy metals, biocides) on the microbiota of wildlife and humans. Previously I have studied the effects of the world's most used herbicide, glyphosate, on the resistance genes of human microbiota, while currently, I am doing my Ph.D. on the effects of heavy metal pollution on the microbiota of wild birds.

Research

I am studying the pollution-related changes in the microbiota of wild birds. The research consists of observational studies, where we have collected microbial samples of great tits, blue tits, and pied flycatchers in Finland and across Europe with the help of many collaborators. Moreover, we have performed experimental manipulations to examine causal relationships between heavy metals and wildlife microbiota.

Teaching

Hosting and tutoring students, interns, and project visitors. Instructing and teaching laboratory methods related to the processing of microbial samples, and guidance in the fieldwork methods in bird research.
