Kaivo-oja is expert working in the fields of foresight, planning and management
sciences and innovation research. His special fields are foresight
methodologies in sustainability analyses, in international energy economics,
innovation research and general societal development. He has special expertise
in energy economics, innovation research, climate change analyses, international
economics and security politics. He has research experience in strategic and
participatory foresight processes in Europa and in international contexts
(especially in Africa, in Middle East (The Middle East Foresight), in Black Sea
Region (The Middle East Foresight and Black Sea Peace Building Foresight) and
in Asia (4 years in the Lao PDR and Mekong River research program) and in Cuba
(the IRIS project). He has worked in the European FP5-FP8 programs and in
Horizon 2020 research programs in years 2000-2019. He has been an expert
evaluator of EU´s Security and Energy Programmes. He has worked as a Finnish
national co-ordinator in the COST A22 (Foresight methodologies) and as an
expert member of the international think tank of European Sustainability
Strategy Theme Network. He has worked for the European Foundations (Dublin,
Ireland) and for the European Parliament (Brussels, Belgium), as well as for
the Nordic Innovation Centre (NIC, Oslo, Norway). In Finland he has been
researcher of the Academy of Finland, the VTT (Technical Research Centre of
Finland), the Finnish Technology and Innovation Fund TEKES and foresight expert
of various line ministries. He has experience as scientific project evaluator
in various Research Programs of the European Union. He has been a foresight
expert blog writer of the SITRA (the Finnish Innovation Fund). He has been
lecturing for the European Science Foundation, for the Russian Academy of
Sciences and for Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). In 2011 he was
visiting scholar at Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA). He has been planning,
writing and implementing 8 large EU Research projects. He is also acting Research
Professor of Kazimiero Simonavičiaus University (KSU) in Vilnius, Lithuania in
the project “the Platforms of Big Data Foresight” funded by the European
Regional Development Fund., in 2018-2022. Currently he works with large data
lakes and Big Data analyses and reports data-driven foresight analyses linking
these analyses to Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) and Industry 4.0 analyses.
He has been acting reviewer in 15 academic journals and worked as an examiner and
an opponent of various academic PhD works. He is one of leading foresight and
innovation research experts in the European Union.
