Biography

Research

In my doctoral dissertation I study the circulation and utilization of navigational knowledge in Sweden and Finland from the 1740s to the early 19th century. I focus on the institutionalization process of maritime education during the period, in which the development of navigational knowledge and methods played a key role. I’m interested in how new navigational knowledge was exchanged, developed, and applied, and how the knowledge was used and utilized in organizing training in the field. My research provides new information on the history of Swedish and Finnish maritime education and the relationship between science, the state, and the navy, but also more broadly on the networks of science and the circulation of knowledge in the 18th and early 19th century Europe.

My research is funded by The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and Kone Foundation.
