Despite atheism being more popular than ever, those interested in the history of the phenomenon have come up short in search of academic titles. Race in a Godless World by Nathan G. Alexander adds an important perspective to the growing field by untangling the multifaceted relationship between atheism and race in the context of the late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century transatlantic world. Rather than assuming a connection between secularisation and modern racism, it challenges the assumption that secularisation has unambiguously opened the door for scientific racism. It is a great contribution to the study of historical atheism, but also intellectual and religious history. It is timely, balanced, well-researched, laying bare the wide range of racial views atheists held.
