This conceptual opening explores the potential impact of psychedelics on entrepreneurial ideation, creativity, and innovation. While the use of psychedelics has traditionally been studied in the context of mental health, spirituality, and cognitive flexibility, emerging discussions suggest that these substances may also play a role in entrepreneurial thinking.
By synthesizing insights from the fields of critical psychedelic studies, psychology, and entrepreneurship research, this work is intended to examine how psychedelics might enhance cognitive processes such as divergent thinking, pattern recognition, and risk perception—key factors in opportunity recognition and business creation.
Drawing on theories of creativity and altered states of consciousness, psychedelics may facilitate breakthrough insights by disrupting habitual thought patterns and fostering novel associations. Furthermore, the dissolution of ego boundaries, commonly reported in psychedelic experiences, may encourage prosocial and mission-driven entrepreneurship. At the same time, ethical and practical challenges arise in integrating psychedelics into entrepreneurial practice, including legal considerations and potential risks of misapplication.
By proposing a conceptual framework for understanding the relationship between psychedelics and entrepreneurship, the aim is to contribute to the literature on early-stage entrepreneurship and altered states of consciousness. The aim is also to open scholarly debate in Finland on positioning altered states not merely as therapeutic tools but as potential cognitive enhancers in the ideation and innovation phases.
