Beyond the business case: The equity turn in open strategy within creative ecosystems

Inclusive strategizing faces complexity due to top management dominance in defining participation. This research utilizes phenomenon-based theorizing and an equity-based approach to explore strategy-making within Experience Economy (EE) ecosystems. Using the Outsider Art Festival (OAF) as a strategic anomaly, the study investigates how creative industry drivers empower strategy outsiders. The analysis identifies seven core mechanisms—such as insider-outsider collaboration and power sharing—that facilitate social transformation. Results establish a benchmark for equity-driven inquiry, offering managerial insights into fostering social cohesion and redistributing power. Finally, the study aligns with SDGs 8, 9, 10, 11, and 17, promoting social justice through inclusive collaborations.
