Tiivistelmä
Functional outcomes of 17 patients who underwent total or subtotal (at least 75%) glossectomy, were evaluated in relation to speech and swallowing according to a score system at a follow-up period averaging 10 months (range 6-36 months). Speech ability and capability of food intake was considered at least acceptable in 82% (14/17) of the patients, respectively. The result was considered excellent in more than 50% of the patients. The 4 years survival rate was 64%. The decisive reasons for the favourable results were appropriate choice of reconstruction method in relation to the surgical defect and most probably the fact that only two patients received postoperative radiation therapy.
