This article discusses the fate of the religious community of Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio alle Tre Fontane in Rome during the Great Western Schism. It focuses on how the Schism affected three areas: 1) the administration of the abbey’s property, 2) the ability of the community to influence its own destiny and 3) the spiritual outlook of Tre Fontane. The vicissitudes of the abbey illustrate how little room for manoeuvre a religious institution may have had during these troubling years. In general, the fortunes of Tre Fontane were highly dependent on decisions made above the abbey. Its possessions were used as assets in a game that was played out at a higher level, between the popes of the different obediences, the king of Naples and the closest associates of both, the Roman baronial families.
