Enterovirus infections are very common. They occur year round, with
early autumn peaks in temperate climates. Human enteroviruses are
classified into four species, enterovirus A-D, based on their genetic
and biological properties. Infections are usually self-limited with
common cold symptoms, but they may be manifested as more severe
outcomes, such as meningitis, encephalitis and acute flaccid
paralysis/myelitis. Currently there is neither specific treatment nor
vaccination against enterovirus infections.
