Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health problem, also from a socioeconomic viewpoint. In the United States (US), the annual costs of TBI are about 400 billion US dollars, representing 0.5% of the total annual global output. Many calculations of costs do not account for indirect consequences and may thus be gross underestimates. Considering the vast impact of traumatic brain injuries on public health and economy, the funding for research has long been undersized.
