Tiivistelmä

This chapter discusses the role of time in the internationalization process model by Reijo Luostarinen, the Helsinki Model of internationalization. It takes a comparative stance by reviewing the Model’s temporal characteristics in relation to the two established internationalization models, the Uppsala Model and the Innovation-based Model. The chapter addresses the possible reasons why the Helsinki Model did not receive the attention and acceptance that it deserves in international business; illustrates three main ways the temporality of the Helsinki Model has been used in existing research; as well as discusses the benefits of the Model, especially when researchers seek to understand and explain the role of time and dynamism within firm internationalization. The chapter brings to the fore the largely overlooked contributions of the Helsinki Model by offering a richer, non-linear and more process-oriented view of firm internationalization than the Uppsala and Innovation-based Models. The latter two have so far dominated in internationalization research.
