Abstract

Joko vai (2006), located in Juornaankylä in the municipality of Askola in southern Finland, is an anti-uranium mining artwork made by Finnish artist Pessi Susikustaa Manner (1969–2015). The artwork was originally commissioned by Uraaniton (Uranium-free), an anti-uranium mining social movement that was active in the eastern Uusimaa region in the early 2000s. However, the artwork was quickly forgotten and its location remained a mystery for almost 20 years. The artwork was rediscovered on 24 September 2023 by Eerika Korhonen, and reconstructed on 7 June 2024 by Marko Marila, Eerika Korhonen, and Triinu Silla. On 8 June 2024, a public event consisting of a presentation of Manner’s anti-uranium mining art and a re-reveal of Joko vai was organised.
