Abstract

The paper analyses Croatian
translations of the names of characters featured in Alan Alexander Milneʼs
collection of stories Winnie-the-Pooh (1926). The corpus includes
Milneʼs source text as well as five target texts (different editions of two
Croatian translations of Winnie-the-Pooh). The research identifies and,
relying on the classification proposed by Luca Manini (1996), categorize the
names of main, secondary, and so-called non-existent characters in Croatian
translations of Milneʼs collection. Utilizing the model described by Jan Van
Coillie (2014), Croatian versions of charactersʼ names are then compared with
the English original and analysed in order to determine dominant translation
strategies and techniques.
