The use and trade of insects permeate history and culture across the world. The purposes of global insect trade are varied, and to ensure that international trade in wild specimens does not threaten the survival of species, some taxa are listed in CITES – the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. This chapter presents the insects listed in CITES and discusses some spatiotemporal trends in the CITES TradeView database. A brief explanation of CITES mechanisms and the listing process is included in the chapter, as well as a discussion concerning the challenges in curbing insect overexploitation due to trade.
