Islam and Muslims in the fringes of Europe are still a very little researched area, even though there are new studies on Muslims in the Southern European countries, namely Italy and Spain. Among the Nordic countries, the research on Muslims in Sweden and in Denmark is much ahead of Norway and Finland. In Finland, with few exceptions, the research on Muslims began as late as at the second half of the 1990s, and hence the studies covered in this article are in vanguard when research on religion and migration in this particular framework is concerned. Indeed, these studies provide a gateway to the un-trodden field of inquiry concerning Muslims in Finland. With respect to these studies, the aim of this article is to examine the role of religion in the process of integration as Muslims immigrants and refugees endeavour to settle down in Finnish society.
