Tiivistelmä

Gamification is often perceived to add gameful elements to a non-game context, such as to work or to learning. Gameful elements often include points, scoreboards, badges and achievements; and the goal of gamification is to motivate or increase effectiveness. Game jams are game creation events where participants brainstorm, design and create games in a short period of time, often under 48 hours. This forces participants to break their game idea into manageable design bits. Participants often receive some types of restrictions to induce creativity. Game jams embody the spirit of gamification in breaking down goals and in figuring gameful solutions to them. This paper discusses the presence, role and emergence of gamification during game jams. This paper adds to the ongoing discussions of the development of game jams and gamification by proposing new avenues for their advancement.
