This introductory chapter explains the concept of literary decadence as it is understood by the editors of the volume and offers an overview of the whole field of Nordic decadence with some background about the circumstances in individual countries concerning the spread and development of decadent currents. Context to aid the understanding of the other chapters, including brief surveys of information otherwise not presented in them, is provided.
